The flu is the most common vaccine preventable illness in Australia. Last year flu numbers were considerably down compared to previous years, but now that everyone is moving around more freely and interacting more with each other, we should see an increase in Flu cases. It is anticipated that the flu vaccine will be in high demand again this year.
The flu is a highly contagious viral infection. Most often you will experience mild symptoms, but in some individuals, it can cause serious illness, hospitalisation and even death in otherwise healthy people. It can potentially be serious for babies, people aged over 65 years, people with underlying medical conditions, immunocompromised people and pregnant women.
It is important that you get vaccinated every year. If you had the vaccine last year, you will not be covered this year. As with most vaccines, the influenza virus constantly changes, so to be protected you need the current quadrivalent vaccine which match these virus strains. We at Star Pharmacy have the latest quadrivalent vaccine for the immunisation service. We will be using the 2021 GSK branded quadrivalent vaccine which is safe and approved for use in persons 6 months and older.
Symptoms can usually appear about one to three days after catching the flu and can last for a week or more. Some of the symptoms of the common cold such as a runny nose, cough, sore throat and sneezing can also be seen when affected by the flu. But it is important to be mindful of other symptoms.
• Fever and chills
• Body aches
• Vomiting and diarrhea – more common in children
Other symptoms to watch out for
• Loss of appetite
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest pain
The severity of symptoms is different for each individual and it is recommended you consult your doctor immediately should you experience any of the above symptoms.
• The flu shot does not protect against COVID‐19:
• The most important thing is you cannot get the COVID-19 vaccination and the Flu shot at the same time. You will need to have them 14 days apart. It is important to notify the pharmacist if you have already had either of these shots.
If you have any COVID‐19 or flu like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath please do not present for your flu shot. Please call the pharmacy to cancel and rebook for another time when you are well.
If you are in self isolation, you cannot visit the pharmacy to obtain the flu shot. You must wait until you are out of self-isolation.
We encourage all staff and customers to practice good hand hygiene and cough etiquette at all times.
All flu clinics will have access to hand sanitiser for use by the immuniser between each vaccination and will be made available for customer use. Please note that it is not a current requirement that gloves must be worn, as long as proper hand hygiene practices are being followed.
Please aim to arrive on time to minimise waiting times in our pharmacies. If you arrive early for your booking, can we please ask that you notify the pharmacist and wait outside or in your car. If for any reason, you cannot attend your appointment please let the pharmacy know as soon as possible
The chairs in our waiting areas have been spaced out to leave 1.5 metres between customers.
Cleaning and disinfecting of our pharmacies:
In addition to our usual cleaning procedures, we have added additional regular cleaning and disinfection of all hard surfaces in our pharmacies.
Staff and customers are encouraged to leave 1.5 meters between each other whenever possible.
